Socotra Islands : Travel Itinerary

7-10 Days

A 7-10 day trip gives you the chance to fully explore the island, from its surreal landscapes to its remote beaches and hidden gems. This itinerary will allow you to experience Socotra’s varied environments, from the mountains and caves to the pristine coastline.


Day 1: Arrival and Introduction

  • Morning:
    Arrive at Socotra Airport and meet your local guide. After checking in at your accommodation, take some time to rest after your flight.
  • Afternoon:
    Begin your exploration with a leisurely tour of Hadibo, visiting the local markets and sampling some of Socotra’s famous honey. This is also a great time to pick up any supplies or gear you may need for the coming days of adventure.
  • Evening:
    Head to Delisha Beach for a relaxing evening by the sea. Swim in the calm waters, and climb the nearby sand dune to catch a magnificent sunset.

Day 2: Qalansiyah Beach and Detwah Lagoon

  • Morning:
    After an early breakfast, set off for Qalansiyah Beach, often regarded as the most beautiful beach on Socotra. Spend the morning swimming, snorkeling, and walking along the beach.
  • Afternoon:
    Visit Detwah Lagoon, a stunning coastal lagoon known for its shallow waters and diverse wildlife. Kayaking, snorkeling, or simply floating in the crystal-clear water are excellent ways to spend the afternoon. For bird enthusiasts, the lagoon is home to many migratory species.
  • Evening:
    Return to your guesthouse in Qalansiyah village or head back to Hadibo for the night.

Day 3: Dragon’s Blood Trees and Diksam Plateau

  • Morning:
    Venture to Diksam Plateau, where you’ll be greeted by Socotra’s famous Dragon’s Blood Trees. Explore the plateau, marvel at these ancient trees, and enjoy the sweeping views of Shebahon viewpoint, which overlooks the Wadi Dirhur Canyon.
  • Afternoon:
    After a scenic hike around the plateau, head down to Wadi Dirhur for a swim in the natural pools. The contrast between the red-tinted trees and the canyon’s deep greens creates an unforgettable scene.
  • Evening:
    Camp overnight on the plateau, where you’ll have a unique experience under Socotra’s star-filled skies. Dinner will be prepared on-site by your guides, offering a chance to enjoy local hospitality.

Day 4: Hoq Cave

  • Morning:
    Start early for the challenging trek to Hoq Cave. This limestone cave, located on the northeastern side of the island, stretches nearly 3 kilometers deep and is home to centuries-old inscriptions and drawings. The hike takes around 2-3 hours uphill, but the views and the cave’s mysteries are well worth the effort.
  • Afternoon:
    After exploring the cave, relax and cool down at the nearby Arher Beach, where freshwater streams meet the sea. The beach is surrounded by towering sand dunes, making it a dramatic and serene spot to spend the afternoon.
  • Evening:
    Set up camp at Arher Beach for the night. The peaceful surroundings and starry skies make this one of the best places to camp on the island.

Day 5: Dihamri Marine Protected Area

  • Morning:
    Head to Dihamri Marine Protected Area, Socotra’s best snorkeling and diving spot. The coral reefs here are teeming with vibrant marine life, including colorful fish, sea turtles, and the occasional dolphin. Spend the day snorkeling or, if you’re a certified diver, take a deeper dive into the underwater world.
  • Afternoon:
    Enjoy a picnic lunch by the sea, and continue snorkeling or simply relax on the beach.
  • Evening:
    Return to Hadibo, where you can enjoy a fresh seafood dinner and spend the night at a local guesthouse or eco-lodge.

Day 6: Homhil Protected Area

  • Morning:
    Visit the Homhil Protected Area, a highland region filled with endemic plants such as the bottle tree and frankincense trees. Take a hike through the area and swim in the natural freshwater pools that offer views stretching out to the Arabian Sea.
  • Afternoon:
    Enjoy a leisurely hike back and stop to take in the views. The trail through Homhil offers panoramic vistas of the island’s unique flora and landscapes.
  • Evening:
    Return to Hadibo or opt for another night of camping in one of the island’s remote areas, depending on your preference.

Day 7: Detwah Lagoon and Qalansiyah (Optional)

  • Morning:
    If you missed visiting Detwah Lagoon earlier in the trip or wish to spend more time here, dedicate another day to this beautiful coastal area. Otherwise, choose a day hike through Hagher Mountains, where you can experience Socotra’s rugged mountain terrain.
  • Afternoon:
    Continue exploring the island’s many hidden beaches or go on a birdwatching tour around the lagoon.
  • Evening:
    Spend the night either camping near Detwah or returning to your accommodation in Hadibo.

Day 8-10 (For a 10-Day Trip): Amak Beach and Remote Exploration

  • Day 8:
    Visit Amak Beach, a more remote, less-visited part of the island. Enjoy a secluded day of swimming, beachcombing, and taking in the serene surroundings.
  • Day 9:
    Trek through some of the island’s more rugged inland regions, such as the Zahik and Hayf Sand Dunes, which are towering dunes that offer a striking contrast to Socotra’s greenery and coastal waters.
  • Day 10:
    Spend your final day revisiting your favorite spots or taking one last relaxing beach day before departing from Socotra.
