Socotra Islands : Travel Itinerary

3-4 Days

A 3-4 day trip to Socotra is perfect for a quick yet immersive experience of the island’s most iconic attractions. While you won’t be able to see everything, this itinerary will cover the highlights and leave you with a sense of Socotra’s unique charm and beauty.

Day 1: Arrival and Introduction to Socotra

  • Morning:
Arrive at Socotra Airport in Hadibo, the island’s capital and main town. After passing through customs, you’ll be greeted by your local guide or driver. Check into your accommodation, whether it’s a local eco-lodge or a guesthouse.
  • Afternoon:
Take a short walking tour of Hadibo, which offers a glimpse into Socotra’s daily life. Visit local markets and shops to experience the island’s vibrant atmosphere. This is also a great opportunity to try local food, like fish stew with rice or Socotran honey.
  • Evening:
Enjoy a relaxing sunset at the nearby beach, Delisha Beach, known for its sand dunes and clear waters. You can take a swim, or just relax and watch the sun dip into the Arabian Sea.

Day 2: Qalansiyah Beach and Detwah Lagoon

  • Morning:
After breakfast, head to the breathtaking Qalansiyah Beach (approximately a 1.5-hour drive from Hadibo). This stunning beach is known for its white sand and clear blue waters, making it one of the most beautiful spots on the island.
  • Afternoon:
From Qalansiyah, you’ll visit the nearby Detwah Lagoon, a UNESCO-protected area known for its serene beauty and rich birdlife. Spend time here snorkeling, swimming, or simply lounging on the beach. The lagoon is a shallow, turquoise bay surrounded by dramatic cliffs, providing a perfect backdrop for relaxation.
  • Evening:
Return to Hadibo, and on the way back, stop for another beautiful sunset along the coast. Enjoy a traditional Socotri dinner with your guide or at your guesthouse.

Day 3: Dragon’s Blood Trees and Diksam Plateau

  • Morning:
Set off early for the Diksam Plateau (1.5-hour drive from Hadibo). The plateau is the best place to see the iconic Dragon’s Blood Trees, the umbrella-shaped trees that exude red sap resembling dragon’s blood. Take a hike around the plateau, marveling at the surreal landscape, which looks like something out of a fantasy novel.
  • Afternoon:
Continue exploring the Wadi Dirhur Canyon, a gorge within the plateau where you can take a dip in freshwater pools. The canyon offers stunning views, with natural rock formations and endemic plants all around.
  • Evening:
Return to Hadibo for your last evening on the island. Spend time reflecting on your journey while enjoying another delicious local meal, perhaps including freshly caught fish or Socotri goat.

Day 4 (Optional, if you have an extra day): Hoq Cave Exploration

  • Morning:
For those with an extra day, visit Hoq Cave, one of Socotra’s most fascinating geological sites. The hike to the cave takes about 2–3 hours uphill, but the effort is worth it. Inside the cave, you’ll find ancient stalactites, stalagmites, and inscriptions dating back over a thousand years.
  • Afternoon:
After exploring the cave, return to the coast for a relaxing afternoon at the beach. Spend your final hours enjoying the peacefulness of Socotra before heading back to Hadibo.
  • Evening:
Depart Socotra or spend one last night in Hadibo before catching your return flight the following morning.
